Context matters. Please read this first:
I started this list of conservative pastors, who seemed to practice quite differently to what the "family values" they preached, in the late 1990s - early 2000s, after pillars of Christian patriarchy, such as Jimmy Swaggart, Bill Gothard, Jim Bakker and Doug Phillips toppled off their lofty moral pedestals.
I knew then that the gender hierarchy, "male headship" doctrine was a serious error of doctrine that would lead to terrible fruit. Because it was un-biblical, inaccurate, prejudicial and unjust.
I could not have known then that part of the rotten fruit from this bad root would involve endless tens of thousands of cases of sexual abuse perpetrated by the very church leaders who preached morality and purity from their pulpits.
Or that this foundational error would also groom the church to accept other forms of delusion, such as Qanon, Christian Nationalism, MAGA Trump-ism and algorithmic Covid disinformation - which contributed to a Covid death toll of over 1 million Americans.
Every day, every week, there's names to add to this ever-growing list of abusers.

I used to believe Satan was the prince of darkness, but that was before I discovered how hard it is to shine a light into the inky darkness of some churches.Please stop blaming Satan and take responsibility for the many ways you have dismissed, perpetuated, and excused abuse.

ReplyDeleteHi Ellen, thanks for your comment. James Dobson is not on the list. You are correct in noting that James Dobson himself has *not* been indicted for any abusive or criminal conduct.
DeleteThe reference to his name came from a quote from a book that mentions him, "Jesus & John Wayne" by Kristin Kobes du Mez writes, ""In the end, (evangelical leaders like) Doug Wilson, John Piper, Mark Driscoll, James Dobson, Doug Phillips and John Eldredge all preached a mutually reinforcing vision of Christian masculinity - of patriarchy and submission, sex and power. It was a vision that promised protection for women but left women without defense, one that worshiped power and turned a blind eye to justice, and one that transformed the Jesus of the Gospels into an image of their own making."
Du Mez is pointing out that Dobson was one of the influential preachers who contributed to the doctrine of "male headship" to make it a tenet of normal Christian culture.

ReplyDeleteDon’t forget Jonathan Ensey, Worship Leader at Living Way Church in Conroe, TX. His father, Randy Ensey, is guilty of trying to cover up Jonathan’s sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl. Jonathan is serving 8 years in prison for the crime.
